2025, an Optimist’s Review

As I wrote at the beginning of the year, I expected to see the uncertainty trend we saw in 2024 continue into 2025, and it did. We also observed a whole lot that fell outside the scope of “business as usual.” But 2025 also brought positives that make me feel optimistic as we head into 2026.

The economic landscape remained cloudy this past year. If you were in the market, you saw tremendous gains; however, budgets at home were tight with inflation still a concern. Running in parallel was a drop in natural catastrophe activity which helped the Property and Casualty space experience increased stabilization and careful growth. Many companies adapted to economic ambiguity and found success, as evident by loaded job boards and companies continue to show that they’re willing to hire.

For employees, the lack of overall market stability prompted many to be risk-adverse when it came to their own career moves. While some were willing to hear about new opportunities, others simply decided now was not the time to test the waters. To them, the risk outweighed the potential gains. As we approach the holidays, many will use this time to reflect and analyze what’s important to them, which will lead to more informed career decisions as we turn the page on 2025 and embark on 2026. Knowing what the driving force for change is can be powerful when evaluating such an impactful decision. I expect this approach to nurture a shift in 2026 when I anticipate more professionals – having grown accustomed to the status quo of ambiguity – will become more open to productive conversations about career opportunities.

What I’ve found reassuring throughout the year is to remember that I’m not alone, and neither are you. While you may feel so much is outside of your control, I urge you to not feel defeated and instead remain flexible and open-minded. There are advantages to seeking information which can foster helpful conversations and the exploration of new opportunities. Remember, obstacles often create opportunities.

2025 had its share of challenges though there are positives we can take with us as we enter 2026. We experienced stability and growth in the P&C market and companies continued to hire despite a challenging market. I expect more of the same in 2026, which can be useful as we all craft our strategy for the new year. I anticipate more employees to have adapted to these conditions and become open to a change of roles. I also expect to see carriers implement soft changes around AI in order to increase efficiency and productivity, making the insurance professional much more successful in their role.

While it’s easy to disengage after a challenging year, there is positive momentum that will serve us well in 2026. Ultimately, how you decide to approach the new year and build upon your past successes will be up to you!
